What causes snoring?
Snoring arises when breathing is obstructed. This can be caused by a cold or an anatomical irregularity in the nose or throat. However, the most common cause of snoring is the relaxation of the muscles around the throat during sleep.
This means that the opening in the throat becomes narrow, and air has difficulty in passing. As one requires the same amount of air to the lungs, the air intake speed increases. Pressure in the throat increases, and the uvula and soft palate begin to vibrate. The noise produced by these vibrations is called snoring.
How common is snoring?
Snoring is one of the most common health problems. Hoffstein and his colleagues reported that 71-86% of Canadian men and 51-57% of Canadian women suffer from snoring.
Which risks are associated with snoring?
Habitual snorers are at risk of:
- Chronic low blood oxygen which may results in blood pressure and heart failure
- Chronic headache
- Fatigue and day sleepiness
